The next generation of pro athletes are more often coming from elite athlete households. Girls volleyball in particular has had an influx of great players at the prep and college level descended from former greats in the NFL and NBA.
Players like Penn State’s Alexis Ewing, daughter of NBA Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing, and D-1 commit Kapri Garnett, daughter of Celtics champion Kevin Garnett, benefited from a winning work ethic and athletic DNA to translate their game to the volleyball world.
Some, like Asjia O’Neal, the daughter of former NBA player Jermaine O’Neal, have even made it to the pro level. O’Neal won the first-ever League One Volleyball championship with LOVB Austin earlier this year. Even superstar Steph Curry’s daughter Riley has made headlines for her burgeoning prowess in the sport.
Now, another daughter of a former NBA star is taking her game to the next level.
Nylah Bibby, a Class of 2027 player from Saguaro High School (Ariz.), has committed to the University of Arizona. The daughter of former NBA player Mike Bibby, the 5’10’’ prospect will become a third-generation Division 1 athlete. Her grandfather Henry Bibby was a former NBA player and coach who won three NCAA titles with John Wooden’s famous UCLA Bruins in the early 1970s.
Dad Mike Bibby was a second overall pick in the NBA who also won an NCAA title with the Arizona Wildcats. Nylah’s older sister Janae played volleyball at Fresno Pacific University, while her older brother Michael Jr. played D-1 college basketball.
Nylah Bibby announced her commitment to stay in her home state of Arizona on social media earlier this month. After a disappointing 9-9 record in Big 12 Conference play last season, Arizona women’s volleyball bounced back to win the 2024 NIVC Tournament in December.
